Factors that might affect my application to adopt

The following factors are listed for the information of possible adoption applicants. They could (but will not necessarily) have an adverse effect on the outcome of an adoption application to any adoption agencies.

    1. An applicant who is more than 45 years older than the age of the child they would like to adopt.

    2. An applicant who has children less than 2 years older or younger than the age of the child applied for.

    3. Joint applicants who are not married to each other; and/or have lived together for less than three years.

    4. An applicant having a child who has been the subject of wardship or care proceedings.

    5. An applicant having recently had a miscarriage or a child who died.

    6. Applicants who are currently undergoing fertility investigations or treatment, or concluded such investigations/treatment less than 6 months ago.

    7. An applicant who has suffered, or is suffering, from a serious or life-threatening medical condition; or a weight problem which may constitute a health risk.

    8. An applicant who has suffered, or is suffering, from a psychiatric illness; or alcohol/drug dependency.

    9. An applicant who consumes an amount of alcohol outside medically advised limits, or uses illegal substances, or who smokes excessively (for example smoking in the presence of a child)

    10. An applicant who has criminal convictions, either spent or current.

    11. An applicant who’s current accommodation is temporary or is insufficient/unsuitable for the placement of a child; or contains domestic animals which may endanger the health and/ or safety of a child.

    12. An applicant who is not domiciled in the UK. (Domicile arises from a person’s residence in the UK, coupled with the intention of making it his/her permanent - or at least indefinite - home)
